19 Books For 2019 - This Is Going To Hurt By Adam Kay

Reading 19 books for 2019 is not the easiest task I've ever set myself but we're getting there! I'm now three books in, having just finished This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay.

This is going to hurt book cover with title in large text and a doctors coat hanging in the background

This Is Going To Hurt is the real life diaries of Adam Kay's time in the NHS. It is both an eyeopening and shocking account whilst on the front line. Kay's diaries will make you laugh and cry. Personally I said a lot of 'oh my god' aloud and then read the especially shocking parts to my husband!

What's clear from practically every of part of This Is Going To Hurt is the immense pressure the NHS and it's staff are under. Many moons ago I worked for the NHS as a non-medical member of staff in the mental health sector, but I heard the stories. Speaking to doctors and nurses on a regular basis I had an idea of the strain they were under, how their budgets were stretched and how as much as they gave their all it never seemed like enough. This is reiterated through Kay's writing.

As a nation, most of us can say we love and value our NHS. We are blessed to have a free health service and whether you value or it not, you should read This Is Going To Hurt. Read how hard our doctors work and the intense and ongoing training they go through. Laugh at the accounts of items being removed from certain places and weep as they battle to save mothers and their babies in childbirth.

Even if you're not a regular reader, read this book! Although some of the content is heartbreaking and graphic, with it's diary entry type layout, it's a quick and easy read, but by the end you're eyes will have been opened, you will have laughed, been shocked and you may have shed a tear or five.
