Tidy Stuff - How To Wash Lego!

We love, love, love Lego!

Don't get me wrong walking on it isn't my favourite thing to do, but Lego is one one of out favourite toys. It gives the opportunity for creative play and a huge amount of imagination. Lots of play though can mean the Lego gets grubby. Sticky fingers, uncaught sneezes and crumbs can make it dirty but it's not all that easy to clean.

You can do it by hand but if you've got a lot of Lego washing it could take hours. In the past we've cleaned Joseph's Duplo by hand and even though they are bigger bits it took us a while!

So, after a lot of research, a bit of YouTube and a little trial and error, I can share how we cleaned thousands of pieces of Lego!

We used.....
  • Laundry bag
  • Liquid detergent
  • Pillow cases
  • Elastic bands
  • Towels
  • Wash brush
First, separate the Lego, keeping the base plates to one side. Bag up the Lego pieces into the laundry bags.

Place each bag into a pillow case and tie it around the top with an elastic band.

Put the bagged up Lego, along with a couple of towels into the washing machine. The towels will help keep the pillow cases spinning, absorb the water and cushion the Lego as it goes around the washer, stopping any pieces that are sticking through catching on your washer.

Add a cap full of the liquid detergent and wash on your lowest setting and spin. Ours was a 30c handwash with an 800 spin.

Layout a couple of towels and when your washer is finished empty the Lego on to it to dry.  After a couple of hours flip the Lego over to dry the other side. If you've got a lot of Lego its going to take a couple of loads.

For the large plate pieces, fill a sink with warm water and half a cap of liquid detergent. Soak for 20 minutes and scrub with the wash brush. If the plates are still grubby put them back into soak for a little longer and try again.

All the cleaning will be worth it as your Lego be sparkling clean and germ free! Well for a little while anyway!

Are you planning on giving your Lego a good clean? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I don't think I've ever washed lego, which given that half the kids lego is MY lego (40-something years old) that's probably disgusting....#KCAKOLS

  4. I have never washed lego altogether before. I washed the odd bit when my boys were younger and dropped bits down the loo, rolled them in mud outside or some other wonderful things that they got up to. Great tips:) Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time.
