Affordable Ways to Make Your Home Look Expensive

(Collaborative Post)

Sometimes, you can make your house look expensive without busting your bank account open. It’s a look and a feel that you are going for, so do you really need to spend the money on the real thing?

Here are a few additions and changes you can make to your home to give it that posh feeling.

Light Fixtures
An ordinary light bulb just doesn’t cut it. A fixture is always placed over the bulb to add to the decor, to add to the ambiance, and to show price. A simple, yet elegant light fixture can add a bit of style to your house to make it look more expensive. Iron fixtures, modern fixtures, ceiling fans, and chandeliers can all be added to rooms to up the appearance of your home and make it look more luxurious.

Landscaping
The right landscaping can make your home look like a resort. Carefully trimmed and edged lawns bordered with flower beds make a home look chic. Cherry blossoms planted on property bloom beautifully in the spring and are a gorgeous green in the summer. With the right kind of shrubbery, your home can look like it’s worth millions of dollars, but really it’s just affordable landscaping.

It doesn’t cost much to have it maintained, and you can plant the flowers yourself to save money. If you don’t have a green thumb, have flowers planted that will return year after year, and all that needs to be done is maintenance.

Build a Fake Book Wall
All you need to build a fake book wall is several books cases lined up next to each other. If you have the space, get a few low sets of drawers that you can put next to each other. After you have done that, you can then put the bookshelves on top of the drawers and the entire wall will look as if the shelves are built into the wall.

This is a very easy way to make your extra room or living room look like a library. This idea is part of several IKEA hacks that you can use in your home.

Fancy Furniture
Just because something looks fancy doesn’t mean it is fancy. You can get tables and chairs made from materials that would make someone think you spent a fortune on something. The best trick is to go to antique stores or vintage stores and pick up pieces of furniture that are selling for close to nothing but are still in great condition.

Wooden furniture always adds class to a home as do marble dining sets. Marble is seen as one of those materials that abound in expensive mansions, but in reality, these tables do not cost an arm and a leg.

Modernize Fixtures
Your faucets, handles, knobs, and doorknobs all tell a story of their own. When attention is paid to the small details of a home, everything looks glamorous. Update all of your fixtures and your home will look more expensive. Carefully crafted and designed faucets in the kitchen and bathroom make both rooms look fancy. New doors and cabinet doors also give a fresh look to rooms that need a facelift.

A lot of great looking fixtures are affordable, can be found at your local hardware store or department hardware store, and nine times out of ten, you can install them yourself.

Change Your Countertops
Granite countertops can make any kitchen seem regal. With the right granite color coupled with the right color cabinet, your kitchen will look as if you spent a fortune to have it redone. Go a bit further and add slow-closing hinges to your cabinet doors and drawers, and you will be giving your kitchen the most modern design that every kitchen seems to have.

When you add the new countertop to the new fixtures, visitors will go into your kitchen and think they have stepped into the lap of luxury.

Wainscot and Molding
Wainscot around the bottom of walls or frame molding around the middle of walls is a throwback to the rich homes of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Both of these design choices add a sense of style, class, and organization to a home. Add some crown molding around light fixtures and around doorways, and your home will look as if you had it personally built and designed by a major architect.

Any place in your home where you can add a bit of style will turn your entire room around. Remember, luxury and wealth are just an image. Any home can look rich even if you’re not.
