Being More Positive!

It's easy to be negative. Moaning, complaining, glass half empty, not half full type of person.

I'm one of those people. Glass half empty. Moaning Myrtle. Negative Nora.

Well, I was until very recently, as I suddenly became very aware of how negative I was being.

Scrabble letters to read 'be positive'

My friend and boss always says "every cloud has a silver lining". Have a sickness bug? Hey you lost 6lb! Toddler running a mock? Think of how well he'll sleep tonight! She's a positive person, where as I was the opposite. Whenever she has uttered the 'silver lining' words to me in the past I have snorted and rolled my eyes.

Then very recently something changed in me. Someone close to me was put in, what can only be described as, a shitty situation. She needed my support and ranting along with her and saying how crap the world was simply wasn't going to cut it. She needed the wise old owl in me, not the squawking young(ish) chick. This time it was me that needed to be the every cloud positivity.

A few days later when my husband came home from work I stopped myself moaning about the monkey like behaviour that the 3 year old had been up to and told him what a great day we'd had. I shared all the positive things and less of the negative.

The result was that he seemed happier too. He didn't feel as much burden for leaving me with the ginger hurricane and he didn't have to have to the disciplinarian having found me burnt out and frazzled.

When our cooker, dishwasher, hairdryer and kettle all decided to either break, or be near to breaking and temperamental, within 48 hours of each other it was easy to be negative and have the "why me" attitude. I really struggled to find any positives but then I thought about it and told myself to get a grip. Sure we can only afford to replace one but that's because we don't want to have loads of things on credit anymore and get in a mess. Very sensible. So we have to wash a few pots, air dry our hair and go without a cuppa! It really isn't the end of the world is it!?

We have a roof over our head, even if we do want to move house. Jobs to go to, even if we don't always like them. We have each other, even if we do irritate the crap out of each other and are ruled by a hobbit sized dictator!

Don't get me wrong, it's not always easy to turn that frown upside down but I know I feel massively better about myself and my life in trying to.

  1. This is fantastic. Happiness is a choice and choosing to appreciate what you do have rather than focusing on what you don't have is a good first step towards achieving true happiness. I'm sure you feel much more positive about your life now you're looking for the good :)

  4. I totally get this. I used to be a pretty pessimistic person, but I started forcing myself to see things a bit more positively a few years ago and I really started finding that it became a habit and had managed to turn me into far more of a positive person. I'm still not sure that you'd call me massively positive (I still have a pretty cynical side!) but I definitely find it easier to see the positive in things. I hope you can carry on seeing things in a more positive light! Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  8. Very well said, it's easy to get in a bad habit of moaning - i do it all the time. But it does make a real difference when you stop and focus on being positive x

  9. Love this bit of positivity. I definitely need to be more positive, I moan a lot and I think my poor partner probably dreads coming home after work to hear me complaining. Love that out of all the things that needed replacement, you went for the hairdryer?! Hahah! Ray x #SharingTheBlogLove

  15. Thank you for the reminder of how infectious positivity can be. As crazy as this sounds, for me, I have to "practice positivity" or the crappy stuff just rolls out of me. Nice to know that another gal understands me. :-)
