World Book Day - Making Joseph's Costume!

Last year for World Book Day I made part of Joseph's outfit. Equipped with my first sewing machine and off cuts of our curtains from the Ikea Live Lagom project, I used Pinterest and YouTube to design and make him a waistcoat.

I teamed it with his usual trousers and a flat cap and granddad neck style tshirt that I'd picked up for a couple of pounds in the Matalan sale. I also made a chimney sweep brush from paper and an empty kitchen role and transformed him into The Sweep from Mary Poppins.

A year on and I'm a little more confident with my machine and my, albeit still novice, sewing skills, so I wanted to try again to make him an outfit for this years World Book Day.

So, here's this years effort.

A knights tunic with a lion crest, a knights helmet and a cardboard sword

It's not often that I say this but I'm really happy with the results! I made the tunic using an old pillow case, which I dyed blue with some dye left over from my Dylon projects. I also dyed some of his bed sheets at the same time!

I used pinking shears along the bottom to shorten it and the side edges to make the arm holes. I then cut a head whole with normal scissors.

Using red and white felt that I had left from Christmas and the outline of a lion I found via Goggle, I made the applique and collar.

The sword is a simple a piece of painted cardboard and the helmet is a hand me down from a friend who has pretty much clothed Joseph since he was born!

Making the outfit and sword probably took me two hours at the very most. It was fairly simple to do and I hope that by sharing this with you it will give you the confidence to give it a try too!

  1. Fab costume, I love it! It's so great that you can create his costume. I once made a cat costume for Halloween for my daughter but the tail fell off and I was in trouble, lol.

Thanks for linking up to #AnythingGoes this week! :)

  2. Oh, I'm really impressed! I've only done one World Book Day costume so far, and I have to admit that I just ordered a Tigger costume online! This looks really impressive and not too difficult (although I'm sure I could mess it up somehow!) Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  3. Oh we love Tigger!!
The key in homemade is to take your time, which we all have little of, so I did most of it when he was at my side snacking or asleep! xx

  4. Wow! This is fab well done you! I had my first WBD this year and I just ordered Alice's costume, as she wanted to be Alice in Wonderland. I only had 2 days notice my youngest was doing it and so she had to go in her ballet outfit, as Angelina Ballerina! This does look easy to do, maybe next year I will go homemade. Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove
