No Sew Draught Excluder

Just over a week ago I posted about our return to Ikea and the Live Lagom project. I was excited to meet the new participants and to see Kerry, the Ikea leader, and Juliette, another former participant, again.

The activity was all about cosy homes and as part of that we made draught excluders. Kerry had pre-warned me to take a fabric, needles and thread but I was a bit concerned as my hand sewing is a bit, well, shit to be honest!!!

Luckily Kerry showed us a no sewing option, which worked really well, so both myself and Juliette gave that one a try and now as promised I'm sharing how to do it with you!

You will need
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk or a pen to mark your fabric
  • Scissors or pinking shears
  • Fabric
  • Toy or pillow stuffing
Fabric, ruler, scissors, tape and tailors chalk

Start by measuring the door that you want to make the draught excluder for. You need to measure the width and depth to make sure it fits and that you won't drip over it.

Next fold your fabric in half with the inside upwards and ensure you have enough to allow around 5 inches around the sides and bottom of your measurements.

Mark out the fabric with your chalk as per your measurements and the allowance.

Cut out. I decided to use pinking shears to reduce fraying.

Then cut the allowance into strips as shown below. You may need to remove one or two of the strips around the corners so they aren't too bulky.

Turn the fabric the right way round and begin to tie the strips to each other to close the sides. Stop when only one of the ends is left open.

Fill with the stuffing. I used the filling of some old cushions that I had meant to throw away.

Tie off the ends.

That's it you're finished! It's really that simple!

Why not give it a try for yourself with some left over fabric or old bedding? The ones I've made have made a huge difference to keeping our home warm and cosy.

Enjoy!

  2. Oh, I'm totally useless at sewing too, so the no-sew aspect of this definitely appeals! I have a few bits of fabric that would be perfect for this too. Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  3. I cannot sew at all, I send everything to my mum to do. So this definitely appeals to me and I think I could probably give it a good go. Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  7. I am sat here with my mouth gaping open... because that is utter genius! How clever and it looks gorgeous too. It's not going to be the weather for it now, but I might give this a go later in the year. Thank you for sharing with the #dreamteam xx
