Recycle Upcycle Christmas Card - Wreath

Today brings the last of our Christmas card upcycle recycling projects and for this one we are going to make a wreath ready for next year.

Completed wreath made with older christmas cards

For this you will need -
  • Your pile of leftover cards
  • A cardboard box or a piece of cardboard
  • A plate or something round to draw around - you'll need two sizes, one bigger than the other
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • String or ribbon (50p @ Wilko)
  • Hole punch or tape
  • Glue stick (50p @Wilko)
A pile of Christmas cards with a ruler, scissors, string, pencil, glue, tape and two plates of different sizes

Now using the cardboard or part of your box draw around your larger plate.

Then centre the smaller plate in the large circle and draw around it.

Cut around the outer circle and then the inner one.

Now, to save you trying to punch a hole through layers of card later, do it now and thread through your string. If you're not punching a hole you can wait until the end and tape it to the back of the cardboard.

Next, make a start on cutting out your shapes. I've seen this type of wreath done lots and other crafters have done circles, holly leaves, flower shapes etc. I went for a star and to make things easier I made a template from a piece of card. You're not forced to do this for any shape but I've done it to save time and for accuracy.

Draw your shapes on the cards and cut them out.

Then, using your glue start to stick the shapes on to your circular template. Try to ensure that at least one edge of the cardboard is covered.

Do one layer all the way round, followed by another layer. Don't lay the next layer directly over the others mismatch them to fill the gaps.

Repeat until your happy with the result.

This is another great craft to reuse your Christmas cards, upcycle and have a quieter activity with the kids!

  2. I love the use of the star stencil to make them all the same shape. Maybe I will do this next year (I usually turn my cards into tags and have already done it with this year's!) #anythinggoes
